Chesapeake Health Care Boosts Wellness with School-Based Health Centers at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School

Chesapeake Health Care is pleased to announce it has received a grant from the Maryland Department of Health to continue the services of the two School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) located at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School in Salisbury, Maryland. With the aid of grant funding, services are made affordable, and no one is refused healthcare for their inability to pay.

Chesapeake Health Care is now operating School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) at both Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School. Staffing the SBHCs are (pictured left to right) Erica Galeone, SBHC Clinical Manager, Caroude Jean Francois, SBHC Front Office Medical Assistant, and Kellie Noonan, SBHC Certified RN Practitioner.

The SBHC medical providers can diagnose and treat many common health conditions right on-site. Through the SBHCs at these two schools, as well as the one that Chesapeake Health Care is already operating at Beaver Run Elementary, Chesapeake Health Care will provide additional health services for the Wicomico County Public Schools system.

One of the goals of the SBHCs at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School is to provide easily accessible healthcare directly at the school to help remove the barriers to regular medical care. “When students don’t have to miss school due to a minor illness, it allows them to focus more on learning,” said Brian Holland, CEO of Chesapeake Health Care. “We believe that these health centers are important to the students, families, and staff in the schools they serve as well as to the school system and the community.”

“We’re delighted to expand our partnership with Chesapeake Health Care to the School-Based Health Centers at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School,” said Dr. Ben Wormser, Medical Director for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau for the Maryland Department of Health. “This program will help expand access to important, high-quality health services in Wicomico County and will keep students healthy, in school, and able to learn.” School faculty members, students, and their families rely on school-based health centers to meet their needs for a full range of age-appropriate healthcare services. SBHCs aim to create a healthier and more focused student body.

Dr. Micah Stauffer, Wicomico County Public Schools Superintendent, is grateful for the partnership with Chesapeake Health Care in support of student and staff health and wellness. “We are excited Chesapeake Health Care will be continuing the services at the School-Based Health Centers at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School,” Dr. Stauffer said. “Chesapeake Health Care is already a great partner at the SBHC at Beaver Run Elementary, and we’re excited to have this collaboration expand. These centers are a great resource to these schools and our entire school system. Together our goal is to improve the health and well-being of our community.”

Chesapeake Health Care’s licensed healthcare provider, Kellie Noonan, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, will be staffing the SBHCs at Wicomico High School and Wicomico Middle School. Ms. Noonan said, “I’m excited to serve the Wicomico County community as a school-based healthcare provider. My goal is to help improve the health of youth and promote healthy practices.”
